DTMF means Dual Tone Multi-Frequency it is how phone communications work, and also the name of an elite hacker; who uses several other aliases.

He recently sent us this file through an anonymous FTP site, exclaiming the solution to the governments recent rash of hacker break-ins.

First of all he reminds us, no hacker just breaks into sites, that is for the Crackors, which he explains are not true hackers.

DTMF started out a Crackor and a Software Cracker, which he says he broke into the Langley, VA, headquarters for fun, but never changed anything, and logged directly out. (circa 1989) He associated with the L.O.D.s King Blotto under another name. He is a CISSP certified computer security and network expert.

Crackors are immature, young persons, generally white males, they listen to rap, techno and hardcore music and crack for status.

The Solution
"I immediately recalled the story of the spoiled car-jacking attempt, when I heard the stories originally; what happened is one or two guys tried to steal a ladies mini-van, but ended up leaving the scene on foot - to get arrested. What happened? They didn't know how to drive a stick shift - a manual transmission made their attempts useless!

So I got to thinking, how can this be applied to cracking? The answer is - change the OS the server is running. Have Linus Torvold or one of those LiNUX gurus to write a proprietary government operating system, which the commands would be different for. If they can't "drive" it they can't "steal" it right?

Sure it would be a little costly, but it would create jobs and make a specialized field. Of course the OS would have to be re-invented annually as no one could learn it enough to hack it."

The Specifics
"In order to make such a project work, applications would have to be already quasi-compatible, all web-work should be done on a local network and a program like the whitehouse would have to be running (a program that re-copies the entire website every so often, making unauthorized changed automatically disappear.)

In order to do this, software houses would have to be outsourced to port programs needed. Also a customized Oracle style database program should be written. I suggest basing a government OS on something already tried and tested, such as FreeBSD or Linux."

In Conclusion
Thinking smarter and laterally is the only way to solve complex problems,
with new approaches to hack-proofing coming on the horizon, the art of the crack will either be a distant memory - or raised to a new level.
