NVIRUS WARNINGS!N
BEWARE of the GONER VIRUS:
gone.scr is an executable disguised as a screen
saver file; upon executing, it will delete files
and disable anti-virus programs by truncating
their crucial parts.
"The "Goner" virus shows up as an e-mailed note with a subject line that reads "Hi." The note reads: "How are you? When I saw this screen saver, I immediately thought about you. I am in a harry, I promise you will love it!"
If activated, the attachment, "GONE.SCR," can delete files from the recipient's computer and can e-mail itself to the e-mail addresses in the recipient's address book. The "Goner" virus can also delete anti-virus protection."

Egghead Re-Opens
Egghead.com re-opens, but no great buys are to be had, Amazon.com is the new management for Egghead now, and so far their prices are a far cry from Eggheads
roots. Egghead started out with a mail order computer catalog under the name of
Surplus Software, they featured educational discounted software and surplus
inventory, they eventually started selling more and more hardware items, eventually
they became Egghead.com after merging with another company and being bought
out. Frys Electronics were going to run Egghead.com but they must have pulled out.
FailSafe Computer Company
A little known computer company called BicBox went into business in 1996, they offer a custom manufactured FailSafe PC called the BicBox. The theory is simple, load a OEM Windows 98 SE on a bootable CD and provide flash memory to eliminate mechanical failures. Since the operating system is on a read-only media, viruses and accidental system file corruption is impossible.
BicBox is targeting markets which have the need for low maintenance computers,
marketing their product as a low or zero maintenance product, such as schools,
libraries, libraries and novice computer users.
New Satellite Radio Launches
Called XM radio, this all digital, CD quality broadcaster is out to do what
FM did to AM radio. Lofty goals with several impedances:
1. Radio is free, however this will be a subscription based service-
with 100 channels @ $9.95 / month
*See below.
2. No cheaper options, all or nothing service.
*If they are see this model isn't working, hopefully they are flexible
enough to make changes, such as adding possible advertising supported
streams.
3. Special equipment needed, either a XM capable radio, or a add-on device.
You'll have to dish out about $285-300 either way.
*Generally when more manufacturers come out, and these receivers become
more common, prices will drop.
4. City reception may be dodgy until repeaters are more commonly available.
*As fast as XM is rolling out, this won't remain a problem very long.
5. Lack of local focus, no local news or content will be available.
*At least the radios that support XM still get your traditional radio.
6. Piracy - if satellite TV taught us anything, there can and will always
be those out there that will get their reception for free. DirecTV suffered
losses to an extent that they have files chapter 11 bankruptcy.
*Most systems take a year or longer to be compromised, and one
advantage to car audio, the electronics are small enough to make
it major undertaking, and possibly impossible for the average pirate.
Overall it sounds pretty cool, and we hope it will work out for them,
check out the website over at: XM RADIO
A few benefits:
Radio support comes from major makers, including alpine and sony,
also they can be purchased from major chains such as Sears.
Crystal clarity. No interference issues to speak of. Two unique satellites
to cover the US from Coast to Coast.

Terrorists and hostile countries better WATCH OUT.
Unveiled this week a 50KW military LASER WEAPON has been tested,
the battle ready version will be ready in 5 years or less.
The new laser will allow us to take down any ballistic threat before it reaches
any of our forces. A 46 Million dollar project, which has been tested at the
White Sands Nuclear Testing Facility under the authority of the U.S. Army.
Imagine this scenario - We invade a hostile environment, with our troops in
a sensitive position, we are normally exposed to weapons such as Mortars,
small Missiles such as AARM, SAMS, Toads, Bazookas and other projectiles
which can cause substantial equipment damages and casualties; however
with this new weapon, we will be able to remove these threats before they
can reach their target destinations, thus neutralizing these kinds of threats.
These Lasers will be large and difficult to maneuver, so it won't quiet be
Flash Gordon yet, as they will be mostly anti-missile defense equipment
which will be mounted on retro-fitted military vehicles, such as personnel
carriers, Aircraft Carriers, larger ATV type vehicles and possibly Tanks.

Major Breakthrough In Networking Technology
Peribit Networks Inc. in Santa Clara, Calif.,
has discovered a way to make network traffic more
efficient by recognizing repeated patterns and
assigning them a delimited label.
"Called molecular sequence reduction (MSR) and based on pattern-recognition algorithms that have been used to study DNA, Peribit's MSR software spots repetitive patterns in data packets and assigns labels to those patterns." -Computerworld
Developers claim that traffic can be reduced as much
as 70-90%.
"If I have 'summertime is my favorite time of the year' in a PowerPoint slide and that same term is repeated in an Excel spreadsheet or a database file, MSR recognizes the packet pattern that equates to that information and applies a label," -Sing
Although a bit pricey for some, this $20K piece of
equipment could quickly pay for itself.
The press release can be found here.
