Internet Lanbridge Review
By: Editor
Our installation was unbelievably easy, we had the software up
and running and configured in a very short time.
Although we didn't have access to a full license, we installed the
default 30 day demo.
The program comprises of a "host" element, which is installed on
the computer with the modem installed, the software initially
appeared to function well.
We quickly found a few very bothersome bugs however.
ICQs net detect program could not determine when the linked
machine made a connection automatically as it would normally.
There doesn't seem to be anyway of restarting a bad connection,
except for unloading practically all of our running programs
such as Jammer, Internet Explorer, ICQ, Email etc...
We seem to get intermittent performance from the internet connection,
at times seemingly disconnecting us without any reason.
There doesn't seem to be any way to disconnect from a dial-up
connection once it is remotely started.
The client also searches for a connection sometimes even when a
dial-up isn't requested, for example at the beginning of windows
loading and continues to give an annoying server not found dialogue box.
We also had problems with Internet Explorer being unable to load
pages after a few minutes and had to close it down and run it again
in order for it to start working again.
On the flip side, it doesn't require any extra protocols to be
installed, and will work on TCP/IP, NetBUI, IPX etc.
Which is good, because they can be increasingly more difficult
to setup correctly.
It also didn't have trouble connecting "on demand" for example when
a URL shortcut was clicked on from the desktop, it immediately started
to dial.
One of the features is the Surf Watch feature, which acts as a content blocker, as well as having the ability to add sites to a blocked site list.
This software will support up to an ISDN connection with no additional
hardware. This is probably the easiest way to get a network on the
internet through a dial-up (modem style) connection.
For ease of use and installation we rate this program a 10.
For performance we rate this program a 4.
For speed of internet connections we rate this program a 10.
Incidentally this program is included in the Linksys networking
kit, which makes for a good bundle.
This program sells for $149 at most software stores.
