(And the coming catastrophe)

Scientists are concerned about a peak solar flare; expected to affect a mass of orbiting satellites just at the end of 1999 and the beginning of the new millennium.

*A similar solar flare disrupted power in Canada in 1989 for days.
*Another flare disrupted wireless service for 40 million pagers a few months ago.

Some of the possibilities are totally communications blackout out
of North America including Internet servers.

And that's not the only trouble:
Hackers teaming up to attack while Year 2000 bugs are being
squashed and site administrators are distracted.

What could happen in a worse case scenario is a hostile country
launching nuclear weaponry under the guise of a Y2K glitch
in their firing systems. Of course this is an extreme case, but as
life dictates, anything can happen.  When it all comes down to
it, we are all subservient to chaos theory.

Some interesting "technique" to Y2K preparedness is one
airline executive ordered their engineers all to be on a flight on
the day of the date switch and most days around that time.
