Speedup Your Connection Pt.2
By: Charles Randolf
We recently we asked to review NetSetter a new concept in increasing your online performance
for dial-up users. The way NetSetter works, is by bypassing the pool of users on your ISP and
instead uses NetSetters' own VPN (Virtual Private Network) which has more bandwidth, which
means pages load quicker using this "shortcut".
The Results
So how did NetSetter score with us?
WebNovice Labs ran Netsetter through many torture tests, which reflects the usage of the average
user, and also some tests which reflect Power Users.
Testing reflects 3 days rigorous usage test, 28.8 dial up modem connection.
Here are the results:
Did netsetter speed up the connections?
YES
Percentage speed increase: 30% increase in web page access times
Note: This is a markable and noticeable increase - not bad!
Increase in download performance? YES
We experience slightly faster and more reliable downloads. Roughly transferring 75MB of data.
We found NetSetter to be an excellent tool for the average user, but how did it score for Power Users?
Running The Gauntlet
We found a few inherent problems when trying to do more advanced surfing, here are the relatively
few problems we encountered:
Pages that do not include any support for connections via Proxy would not access correctly.
Under heavy usage we found some extremely slow sites would cause our pages to time out.
Under very heavy traffic we found the Proxy itself would time out on certain pages.
NetSetter failed to properly connect to floating network connectibles such as ICQ Web Version.
NOTE: These problems would most likely NOT affect the average user.
When Good Proxies Go Bad
